FEDERAL PIZZA PV
Federal Pizza PV
Phoenix, Arizona
Vital Stats:
Opened: 2026
Owned: Upward Projects
Size: +/- 4,500 SF
Team: Brick & West Design, SoCal, Säzän
Federal Pizza PV is conceived as a neighborhood anchor— an extension of its surroundings. The building sits low and horizontal, reinforcing a sense of continuity with the desert edge while establishing a clear, approachable presence along the street. The architecture prioritizes porosity and movement, allowing the project to participate in the life of the district rather than stand apart from it.
A continuous, curved patio defines the public face of the project. This gesture softens the building perimeter and creates a series of thresholds that blur interior and exterior. Rather than a singular entry, the experience unfolds incrementally—shaded edges, open seating, and layered zones of activity that invite a range of uses throughout the day. This approach aligns with a broader interest in creating “livable, neighborhood-oriented” spaces that foster connection and repeat engagement.
Materially, the project draws from a restrained palette of brick, concrete, and steel—elements that feel familiar within the Phoenix context but are composed with a lighter, more contemporary touch. These materials are allowed to register their texture and age over time, reinforcing a sense of permanence without feeling overly fixed. The architecture operates in a “both/and” condition—simultaneously casual and considered, durable and refined—prioritizing experience over formal expression.
Inside, the plan is organized around visibility and flow. The bar and kitchen anchor the space, with seating arranged to support a gradient of activity—from more intimate edges to higher-energy communal zones. Openings and sightlines maintain a constant dialogue between interior and patio, allowing the atmosphere to shift naturally with occupancy, time of day, and season.
The interior language introduces moments of color, light, and graphic expression, but always within a controlled framework. These elements are about balancing nostalgia and creating rhythm—punctuating the architecture without overwhelming it. The result is an environment that feels layered and lived-in from the outset, supporting a wide range of experiences without prescribing a single one.
Ultimately, Federal Pizza PV is an exercise in calibration. It builds on the identity of the original while adapting to a new context, using familiar materials and forms to create something that feels both specific and open-ended. The project is designed to settle in over time—to become part of the neighborhood fabric rather than simply occupy it.
