The design of the Spinato's Pizza in Gilbert builds upon a legacy brand while reinterpreting its identity for a contemporary suburban context. The project balances familiarity with refinement—preserving the warmth and approachability that defines Spinato’s while introducing a more deliberate architectural language rooted in clarity, craft, and longevity.
At its core, the space is organized around a sequence of layered experiences rather than a singular dining room. The plan unfolds from a welcoming entry into a series of interconnected zones—each calibrated to support different modes of gathering, from quick family meals to longer, more social occasions. This gradation is reinforced through subtle shifts in scale, lighting, and material, allowing the restaurant to feel both cohesive and varied.
Materiality plays a central role in shaping the experience. A restrained palette of masonry, warm woods, and textured finishes and colors grounds the interior, lending a sense of permanence and authenticity. These materials are expressed honestly and allowed to age gracefully, reinforcing the idea that the restaurant is not only built for immediate impact but for long-term use within the community. Moments of contrast—whether through tile, metal accents, or color—are used sparingly to highlight key touch points and areas of interaction.
Ultimately, the project is less about reinvention and more about evolution—an effort to distill what has always made Spinato’s meaningful and express it through a more disciplined and enduring architectural framework.
